Women's Cricket Cup Corfu 2024

September 17, 2024

It has been a busy month for the Spanish women’s national team.

At the start of September, they headed to Vienna to take part in a bi-lateral T10 series with Austria, sponsored by the European Cricket Network and in a couple of days they head to Corfu for an important T20I ranking series with Greece.

The five match contest with Austria resulted in an emphatic 4-1 victory for Spain with all the players contributing during the event.

Naomi Hillman-Bermejo MVP

Naomi Hillman-Bermejo was named the MVP of the tournament and celebrated the weekend of her 18th birthday by scoring the most runs over the five matches, finishing with a batting average of 58.66.

Amy Brown-Carrera was the leading wicket taker with eight scalps and in game 5 she turned a close game, returning bowling figures of four for eight that Spain won by six runs.

The three debutants Alexis Hartley, Amelia Jones and Olivia Bennett-Baradad all contributed in a positive fashion on and off the field.

Hartley will be heading to Greece along with Hillman-Bermejo and Brown-Carrera. Lucia Deepa Chukkapalli Linares and Andrea Davidson Soler will also be on the plane as will be debutant Kat Frost, who was born in Zaragoza.

The Barcelona contingent will be as strong as ever with regulars Tasbiha Mirza, Uswa Syed, Samaia Basharat and Memoona Riaz Quresh Muhammad selected. The Barcelona International player Justyne Smagacz is the other debutant in the team.

It is a welcome return to the Madrid based Payal Chilongia, who missed the Austria series with work commitments and regular captain Elspeth Fowler, who has done so much to foster a great team spirit and gel the squad together, will once again lead from the front.

The squad will be completed with the all-women management team of Molly Sellers (coach) Catherine Moretti (assistant coach) and team manager Marisol Carrera Vivar.

The first match on Friday 20th September will be a T10 contest in the morning followed later in the day with the first of five T20I ranking internationals.

The other four matches take place on the Saturday and Sunday (two each) with the squad members flying back to their various destinations on Monday.
