After starting the year with a clean sweep over the Czech Republic in a five match T10 series at the Montjuic Stadium in Barcelona the Spanish National Women's team have their next matches in May against Italy in Brescia.
Once again, it will be a T10 series and the head coach Neil Brook returns to Italy with an international team for the first time since 2005. On that occasion he took a Under 15 Spanish squad to play in an event at the Hippodrome ground in Rome.
Coach Brook has named a similar side to the one that defeated the Czechs, with two enforced changes. Team captain Elspeth Fowler and bowler Muskan Naseeb are both unavailable. Newcomer Deepa Chukkapalli is drafted in the squad for the first time and is expected to make her debut. The youngster plays her regular cricket in Lancashire, and holds a Spanish passport as her mother was born in Spain.
Regarding the series Neil said "Our Spanish National girls are really looking forward to visiting Italy for the forthcoming series, the last time one of our National teams visited Italy was way back in 2005. We are hoping to build on the success we had against the Czech's, and it will be a difficult tournament but our girls will be prepared and ready to face our friends in Italy"
The Spanish Women have played the Italy Women in two events in recent years. The first was a T20i on grass in Desert Springs and in December last year they played Italy a couple of times in the inaugural ECC-W T10 event at the Cartama Oval. In all three matches the Italians, who are ranked seven places above Spain in the T20I international rankings.
