After successful trials in Madrid and Barcelona recently the Spanish Women’s National team coach Neil Brook has selected a squad of fourteen players for the inaugural European Cricket Championships that will take place at Cartama in mid December.
The event has teams from Holland, Austria, Spain and Italy are confirmed and the tournament will take place between December 17th-22nd. The Spain squad is made up with players from Cataluyna, Madrid, La Manga and the United Kingdom.
Muskan Naseeb, Rabia Mushtaq, Uswa Syed, Tasbiha Mirza, Samaia Basharat, Memoona Riaz Quereshi and Aneesa Azmat ensure a healthy contingent from the Cataluyna region. Madrid and the U.K. also provide three players a piece.
The evergreen Payal Chilonga of Madrid CC is joined by two team mates who will make their debuts. Sisters Julia and Maria Zamorano Molina impressed in the Madrid trials and are rewarded for their hard work, and that of their coach Lewis Clark.
Regulars from the United Kingdom Amy Brown Carrera and Naomi Hillman-Bermejo are joind by another debutant Andrea Davidson Soler who plays her regular cricket in Berkshire.
Elspeth Fowler of La Manga Cricket Club will once again captain the team and is the sole representative from the ECCL league.
Regulars Uswa Syed and Payal Chilonga recently received a sponsorship deal from Grizzly Sports and will be using their new kit for the first time in the event that will be livestreamed around the world.
Coach Brook has also named Marisol Brown Carrera, Shabaz Shaukat and Catherine Moretti as part of his auxillary staff. The quality of the opposition is a step up for the Spanish Ladies who are currently ranked 35th in the world.
Regarding the event Neil commented “We are all looking forward to what will be an exciting tournament for our Women’s National team.We have four debutants and five Spanish nationals all playing in our first ever group picked solely on ability alone.
The depth and growth of Women’s cricket in Spain means that some strong players have missed out this time around, as growth and sustainability is the way forward for the National squad.
It is going to be a challenging series but we are all preparing ourselves for what will be a fantastic event”
