ALFAS THWART A VALIANT MADRID
Madrid gave Alfas their hardest league game to date but still failed to stop the communidad de Valencia based club from gaining maximum points.
Madrid arrived at the Woodbridge Oval with only ten players when one of their players was delayed overseas, so even before the game started they had their backs against the wall.
Madrid won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that Alfas would have made too, given the opportunity. The opening pair of Doust and Langhans proved very resourceful and combined to create an opening partnership of 90 before Langhans was stumped by Climent off the bowling of Wasim for a respectable 38. The other opener Doust followed one run later as Lupson caught a skier on the midwicket boundary off the same bowler and when Baker was stumped again off the bowling of Crompton with the score on 121 it looked like Madrid were again capitulating like they had the week before at La Manga.
Syed, Fernandez and Khan had other ideas and the middle order showed a resolve that was lacking in their last game to bolster the final total past the 200 mark.
Notable contributions included 4 stumpings from wicket keeper Climent and 5 wickets from the leg spin of Crompton. This completed an excellent cricketing week for Crompton who scored 111 against Valencia in the last league game for Alfas.
Alfas started with their usual aggressive nature against the restricted field and moved swiftly to 43 before Howe it a full toss to mid-wicket into the grateful hands of Daniel. Crompton fell cheaply this time round but Pennick batted sensibly to score a fine 54 before being unfortunately run out when backing up too far off the bowling of Syed.
Wasim was also batting strongly at the other end scoring runs freely to end with 39 not out and Climent contributed 3 runs to see the home side home with 6 wickets to spare. Alfas accrued 20 points from the game and Madrid 5 points, although 2 points were deducted for only having 10 players.
Madrid II faired just as badly as they failed to provide a team for their two La Manga games this weekend. Consequently, Intellectuals and Madrid United received 17 points each and Madrid II received minus 10 points from each game for a total of minus 20 points from this weekend.
In the other CB League 1 game played this weekend Valancia Green overturned La Manga by 30 runs. Valencia Green batted first and scored 180 all out. La Manga looked on course to overturn the Green total but a batting collapse saw them fall 30 runs shy of the Valencia total.
As a result Valencia Green took 18 points and La Manga 7 points from the game. La Manga are on top of the table, but have played a game more than Alfas and Valencia Green who are in second and third place respectively.
