Torrevieja Cricket is tops!
Just 3 years ago Torrevieja Club de Cricket was formed from the rump of San Fulgencio CC. Our first “home“ games were played at La Manga, but with the excellent support of the staff at the Torrevieja Sports stadium, we now have our own wicket at the athletics track so play on real grass!
For our first two seasons we were close to or bottom of, the East Central Cricket League Second Division, which covers an area inland toMadridfromValenciaand Murcia Regions plus Almeria, but in our first game of the season, beat Sporting Alfas who we had never mastered before so we dreamt of a better future.
This bright future started with a sponsor in the form of www.expatinsuranceinspain.com from whom we are very grateful to Ken Taylor, which enabled us to purchase new whites and advertising material. Player Dave Reid has created a new website www.torrevieja-cricket.com to further spread the word and a whip around amongst players enabled us to acquire a vintage 9-seater mini-bus in superb condition which is ideal for getting to matches. .
Our team reflects the cultural background of the Vega Baja with players fromScotland,Wales,England,IndiaandBangladesh. We are still seeking our first Spaniard to copy other league teams. Half of the club are adolescent lads who have learned the game with us and have developed into good team players. One such young man, Adam Alger, has just been invited to attend a forthcoming academy for the national Spanish side!
Our season has finished on a high as we have just been crowned champions of the league with cups and medals being presented by Graham Fowler the former Lancashire and England batsman.
The spirit within the club has always been friendly and welcoming, so if you have an interest in the game as a player, official, supporter or sponsor please get in touch via Torrevieja-cricket@live.com or call Club President Graham Shelton on 605319889 or Colin Griffiths, Press Secretary on 626411002
