STRONG START TO THE LEAGUE BY SPORTING ALFAS I

SACC I demolished a depleted La Manga side by 237 runs in a rain interrupted game at the Woodbridge Oval this weekend. Chasing down 294 for 6 La Manga could only manage 57 runs in reply. La Manga won the toss and put Alfas in to bat on an overcast day with rain in the air.

The first over by sixteen year old Tom Vine was a mixture of wides and runs, but on the plus side for the youngster he also grabbed the wicket of Spencer, who was caught behind by Brook with the score on 17

This brought Pennick to the crease and along with the other opener Ali the runs flowed freely. The score had moved to 72 off just 8 overs when Ali skied one and was caught by Nadar in the deep for a score of 37 that included five fours and two sixes.

Compton joined Pennick at the crease and both looked untroubled as they continued to move the scoreboard along at close to eight an over. By the 22cd over the Alfas pair had moved the score onto 172 when the players were forced off the pitch by heavy rain. Ten minutes later the teams re-emerged as the rain subsided and the two batsman continued to torment the La Manga bowlers with some cracking shots.

The pair put on 169 for the third wicket in just 22 overs until Wambeek in his second over clean bowled Compton for 97, just three short of a well deserved century. Two balls later, Lupson suffered the same fate as Compton and now Alfas were 241 for 4, and 34 runs away from their final batting point.

Contributions by Moñoz (6) and Laundon and Taylor, who remained 15 and 14 not out respectively, saw the Alfas final score after 45 overs reach 294 for six, well clear of the 275 required to take maximum batting points.

La Manga had the worst possible start, when Amio was out to the first ball he received, caught by Munoz off the bowling of Lupson with the score on 5. When the other opener Brook was also out with the score on just 9 it looked like Alfas would see the game off quickly. It was only a question of whether the inclement weather would stay away long enough for Alfas to finish of the job.

With this in mind Alfas continued with the aggressive bowling of Laundon and Lupson, and the La Manga batsman had no answer to the Alfas pair as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Only Iqbal managed double figures for the visitors and when Laundon got Vine and Wambeek with consecutive balls La Manga had been skittled out for a paltry 57 runs.

To add salt into the La Manga wounds, the visitors had two points deducted by umpires Kew and Pitts, for failing to provide the required designated scorer for league matches. Laundon ended up with 5-27 from  6.5 overs, and Lupson 4-22 from 6 overs, to give the home side maximum bowling points and a 237 run victory.
