ALFAS WELCOME AUSTRALIAN SIDE TO THE WOODBRIDGE OVAL
Sporting Alfas have scored a major coup by inviting a side from Australia to play them next month at the Woodbridge Oval. This will be the first match in the Flanders tour of Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco.
The so called Sporocco tour starts in Alfas on Sunday the 27th of June, before the tourists play games against the Moroccan and Gibraltar national sides
The team come to Europe with an impressive pedigree, having played and beaten the Japanese National team in 2008.
It is not the first time that Alfas have had an Australian opposition,.as a team from Western Plains came over in 2001. Several of the long standing members of Alfas remember that well, because the Aussies proved way too strong and skittled out the hosts for a paltry 41, still the lowest score Alfas have ever scored in a competitive match.
Alfas have come a long way since the turn of the century and are bound to be pumped up for a game that promises to be one of the highlights of the clubs season.

The Ned Flanders XI were founded in 1997 by Moorooka’s favourite son, Matthew Young. Since its inception, the team has played cricket in the Churches Cricket Association of Queensland, winning the CCAQ Premiership trophy five times in the last 10 years, and the CCAQ State Shield back-to-back in 2007-08 and 2008-09. The team has gone through a number of changes over the years, most notably a reversal in policy that allowed the team to accept members under the age of 30 for the first time in around 2001. This backdown by well renown ageist Matt Young resulted in an influx of younger players into the Mighty Ned Flanders XI. Suddenly the likes of Liam Exelby, the Dillon Brothers, Stevie D and Brett Whalley were tearing up the pitch on a Saturday afternoon. One only has to look at the sudden change in the size of the trophy cabinet to realise it was the right idea. Since the arrival of the ‘Wide Bay’ invasion of 2002, the Neddies have had a reliable batting line-up to complement the experienced St. Laurences bowling outfit. The team has also strongly enforced an equal oppurtunity policy which opened the door for Brendan Dillon to become the first indigenous player in the club’s history. The team currently calls Yeronga State High School home and procedes to conduct all of their home games and training sessions at the school. |
