SPANISH PLAYERS RIDING HIGH IN THE STATISTICS

TANVEER TAKES THE TROPHY

Barcelona and Spain´s opening bowler Tanveer Iqbal capped an excellent weeks work by winning the player of the tournament at the Gala Dinner Awards in La Manga last night.

Tanveer played in all five matches for Spain bowling 39.4 overs for a total of 114 runs and 15 wickets, the highest amount of wickets taken in the tournament by any one player. His best results came in the match against Isle of Man when he returned figures of 5-25, and throughout the tournament he ended with an economy rate of 2.87.

Wasim Ul-Rehman also performed admirably with the ball and finished 5th in the top wicket takers table with a total of nine wickets throughout the five matches, and Pedro Venus finished 20th in the statistics with a total of 5 wickets off only 15 overs for a cost of only 42 runs.

Spain had five bowlers in the top eight for the best bowling figures in one game. The opening bowlers of Tanveer Iqbal and Talat Nadeem proved a constant force thoughout the tournament and complimented each other well in evey game Spain played.

Tanveer finished 3rd with his 5-25 against the Isle of Man and also took 5th and 8th position with his 4-11 against Malta and 4-23 against Israel respectively. Talat took 4th with his performance against Portugal (5-32). Pedro Venus added to the notion that Spain had the best bowling attack of the tournament by taking 7th spot in the Belgium game when he returned figures of 4-21 to confirm him as one of the best all-rounders of the tournament.

Pedro and Jimmy Morgan also finished highly in the batting stakes. Morgan finished 3rd in the highest score table with his match winning 82 not out against Belgium and the cultured innings of 51 not out against Israel claimed 15th spot. Pedro was assured of 8th spot with his 67 against Malta, and their is a special mention for Sam Lupson who finished in 20th position thanks to his swashbuckilng 45 not out off 19 balls, also against Malta early in the tournament.

Jimmy Morgan and Pedro not suprisingly figured highly in the top aggregate batsmen, with Jimmy finishing second with 178 runs and Pedro 10th with 115 runs in the tournament. Shafique Ali also got a mention in the top aggregate batsman section, finishing 12th with a total of 87 runs from his five innings.

Spain also had 5 of the top 20 patnerships in the tournament. Morgan and Venus came 7th with their partnership of 79 against Malta, and openers Ali and Spencer put on 69 for the first wicket against Portugal to finish 11th in the table. At 12th was the partnership Graham Howe and Jimmy Morgan forged against Belgium which totalled 67, and the 10th wicket partnership by Christian Munoz and Sam Lupson of 64 was the best last wicket partnership of the tournament and 15th overall.Finally, the partnership of 54 not out between Wasim Ul-Rehman and Jimmy Morgan that brought Spain home against Belgium figured number 18 on the partnership table.
