SPANISH JUNIORS WIN TRIPARTITE TOURNAMENT

The Spanish Junior Academy won a tripartite tournament last weekend when defeating two public schools from England, Westminster and Emmanuel College in a Twenty20 competition held at La Manga. The day started with the two schools playing each other. Emmanuel posted a meagre total of 93 but Westminster lost their way in the middle of their innings and could not find the four runs to tie off the final ball of the match.

The Spanish Juniors played Westminster in th next match. The visitors batted first and accrud 127 for 2 off their allocated overs with Winder scoring 92 not out. On a lively La Manga wicket the score was par for the course and the Spanish openers Joel Brook and Christian Munoz-Mills got the hosts off to a flier. Munoz-Mills particularly took a liking to the bowlers and hit a quick fire 44. A few quick wickets gave the home supporters a few nervous moments but Brook 25 not out saw the Academy home with 2.3 overs to spare.

The final match o the torneo saw the to winners matched against each other. Emmanuel won the toss and batted first and scored 116 for 2. Depite the like of wickets the Spanish bowlers stook to their task well and did a great containment job. The tied and trusted partnership of Brook and Munoz-Mills again put the hosts on the front foot but the hosts were dealt a body blow when Munoz-Mills was caught in the deep on 12. Tom Vine and Brook continued the good work with the Brook reaching his half century before being caught for 53. Garside and Jamie Roper saw the game home for La Seleccion with 2.2 overs remaining to give the Junior Academy two great wins against competitive sides.

It is the turn of the Spanish Senior side to play next, as they play in the six team event that is being organised by Madrid Cricket Club. Their 5th annual solidarity tournament is at La Manga this weekend with this years selected charity being victims of acid atacks. The event will be bolstered by teams from Norway anfd the UK and celebrity chef Tommy Miah and ex Lancahire and India wicket-keeper batsman Farook Engineer. Madrid will also have two players from the Tommy Miah Bangladesh Academy in their ranks. First games are Friday at 10.00 am with the final played Sunday afternoon.
