REPORT
Spain finished off their Division 2 campaign in fine style with a nail-biting 5 run win against a strong Israel side that included the player of the tournament Gabi Schacat.
Spain won the toss and elected to bat. Spain opened with Foster and Taylor for the second consecutive game. Both fell to Schacat and Diveker respectively without reaching double figures and Spain were struggling somewhat with the score on 34 for 2. Sivier and Garside came together and both looked self assured as the score began to tick along nicely. Garside hit three consecutive fours and was looking particularly dangerous when he holed out at point to a rising ball from Schacat.
The middle order collapsed again but Sivier stayed composed and kept Spanish hopes alive with some stylish stroke play. When he finally fell at 55 he became the eighth wicket down in the 30th over and Spain were in great danger of not seeing out their full quota of overs. A quickfire 12 by Eadington and six runs by Sunderland took the Spanish final score to 155 all out off 34.3 of the allocated 40 overs.
(Another four to Sivier)
Israel’s reply was not unsimilar to that of Spain with both openers going cheaply. When Sivier got Korman out for a duck Israel were looking even more vunerable at 27 for 3. A solid partnership by Schacat and Kehimkar swayed the game back in Israel’s favour until Garside got back into the act and clean bowled Kehimikar for 15. Whilst dangerman Schact was at the crease the Spanish total was looking very small and with Nojman batting sensibly at the other end the writing seemed to be on the wall for Spain. The introduction of spin in the form of Seekings and Taylor turned the gane around once again and when Schacat was adjudged lbw to Seekings for 56 Spanish hopes were raised once more.
At 138 for 8 and with overs to spare, the game was their to be won for both sides. It seemed Spain wanted that 3rd place podium more and two excellent catches by Taylor and Girling in the outfield gave Spain victory as Israel succumbed to the pressure of some tight bowling and excellent fielding.
(Pressure gets to Talker who is stumped by Eadington)
Winning a close game in such fashion was a great way to finish the tournament and the Under 17 squad should be proud of the way they represented Spain, both on and off the field of play. Four victories, one loss, and the man of the match in all five games made sure that the Spanish team had overall played an excellent tournament, having beaten associate teams along their way to finishing a very creditable third place.
REPORT FROM THE ISRAELI WEBSITE
Finishing second in their group, Israel faced Spain with third place in the tournament at stake. Once again Israel fielded first and good bowling by Kristi (4 for 39) and two wickets each for Schachat and Divekar left Israel needing 156 to win It hardly came as a surprise to find Schachat the only batsman capable of occupying the crease for any length of time, with Kehimkar again playing freely in scoring 14. With 18 required, Schachat was adjudged leg before to a ball which hit him almost on the waist for another excellent knock of 56, and although Razpurker and Divekar each managed to find the boundary, Israel were all out for 150.
