THE JOY OF SIX FOR GIRLING AND SPAIN
Ben Girling took six wickets as Spain made a winning start to the European Under 17 B Championships with a 38 runs victory over Switzerland at Crosby.
Chasing Spain’s 176 all out off 39.2 overs, the Swiss were in trouble at 92 for six but a stand of 41 in just six and a half overs between Ali Saleem and Ross Cameron kept the Swiss in the hunt and Spain under pressure – until a run out hurried the game to its conclusion.

Spain celebrate a wicket against the Swiss
Saleem Ali, Switzerland’s top scorer with 43, was the victim and then Girling, who had taken the first three wickets came back at the end of the Swiss innings to run through the tail, with a further three wickets in just one over to finish with igures of six for 17. The Swiss were finally bowled out for 138 with Spain´s captain Joel Brook taking the other three wickets.
Spain’s innings was built around Charlie Cook’s 59. Cook was making his debut for Spain, after being drafted in late to the squad by the Junor Director of Spanish cricket Neil Brook. Coming to the wicket after the loss of two wickets in six balls, which left Spain 51 for four, he slammed seven fours and two sixes off just 46 balls before he was seventh out with the total on 163.
Spain rather lost their way after his dismissal, managing only 13 runs in the next five overs and being bowled out with four balls unused. Himish Parikh, Ross Cameron and George Gaillet all took three wickets for the Swiss.
The 38 run victory gives the Spanish a much needed opening win in Group B. In the other Group B match played today the Isle of Man had a comfortable 66 run win over Germany in a match reduced to 37 overs a side due to rain. Italy and France trounced Belgium and Gibraltar respectively in Group A. Greece and Austria were the recipients of rest days today and they will both start their tournament campaigns tommorrow Spain will now have a rest day on Sunday before an encounter with the hosts, the Isle of Man at St John´s on Monday, which could well prove to be Spains hardest group game.
