SPAIN SELECT GO TWO FOR TWO IN THE LA MANGA CLASSIC

The Spanish select XI made it two wins from two and finished the first day of the La Manga Classic topping their group.

Their second victory was even more emphatic than their 8 wicket defeat of Findon earlier in the day, as they saw off the challenge of RAF Wyton by beating them by ten wickets.

The side from the military won the toss and elected to bat first. As in Spain’s first game, runs were at a premium and the batsmen found it difficult to get starts and find the boundary as the Spanish bowlers bowled tight lines into the right channels.

Indeed, only one of the visiting batsmen (Robinson) accrued double figures and throughout the whole of their innings they could only muster up one boundary. The RAF side were finally all out for just 69 in 19 overs.

As you would imagine with such a low score, all the bowlers had commendable figures, but a special mention must be given to Jamie Roper who just missed out on a hat trick and ended with figures of 4 for 11 from his four over stint. Two other teenagers, Yasir (3-18) and Akash Panchal (2-19) chipped in with majority of the other wickets.

Spain, in reply, opened with Yasir Ali and Joel Brook. Both scored at ease in an uncomplicated and clinical response that gave the hosts victory inside nine overs.

Yasir ended on 32 not out and the Alfas batsman Joel Brook on 28 not out. Tougher games face the Select side tomorrow when they face a Belgium Select XI and a United XI from Girona, but the signs are good for Spanish cricket as the younger faces in the squad continue to make noteworthy contributions.
