Costa del Sol CC vs. Granada CC – Sunday 22nd January 2023

Fluent Finance Abroad Southern Cricket League 35 Overs – Match Day 7 – Costa del Sol CC vs. Granada CC – Sunday 22nd January 2023.

Match Day 7 of the 35 over league started on a sunny morning as the Costa Del Sol Cricket went head to head against Granada Cricket Club.

Costa Del Sol won the toss and elected to bat first. Rupesh and Phil Townsend took the new ball for Granada.

Lee Rimmer and Dylan Henshall opened the batting for Costa Del Sol CC. Both Batsmen looking accomplished at the crease as they got off to a flying start hitting boundaries every over taking CDSCC to a rapid 35/0 in 3 overs.

Just as things were looking all too comfortable, Lee R was run out in the next over having scored 25 off 14 balls trying to steal a single to point.

Kenroy Nestor came in at no. 3 and hit a couple of powerful blows with two consecutive sixes off the bowling of Phil T, before he was bowled next ball for 14 runs.

Chris Batten followed for CDS and joined Dylan H who was soon caught by a superb catch at mid-wicket off Rupesh’s bowling, scoring 19 runs with CDS down 3 quick wickets.

That meant young Jaime Riley was in at 5, with senior pro, Chris Batten in at the other end who proceeded to guide a couple of nice shots to the boundary before he was bowled by Phil T for 9, which brought CDS CC to 73/4 after 8 overs.

CDS CC looked a little unstable by the time Rupang joined Jaime Riley at number 6, perhaps with some nerves setting in having not played any form of cricket since before Christmas with the league schedule as it was.

However, the two batsman dug in to help rebuild the CDS’s innings with some solid shots that kept the scoreboard ticking by playing simple and rotating the strike for valuable singles & doubles. Rupang was particularly playing some inspiring shots at this point before being dismissed for 37, caught of the bowling of Aakash bringing CDS CC to 141/5 after 20 overs.

Gurnam Singh was next in at 7 to support the stylish Riley, who continued to play his own game while scoring freely for much of his innings, reaching his 50 with a tidy boundary. This triggered both batsmen to go on the offensive with some excellent running between the wickets while still adding boundaries to the total.

Jaime Riley was eventually stumped on 92 runs playing selflessly in the very last of the 35 overs in an attempt to secure an even larger total and perhaps get to his ton, while Gurnam S remained not out on 24 runs as CDS CC closed at 248/6 in their allotted 35 overs.

The second innings meant Granada CC needed 249 runs to win. Granada opened the batting with Richie Abbott and Paul Cone while CDS CC gave debutant Dylan H the ball with Bruce Reynolds taking the new ball from the other end.

Paul got caught LBW early on 3 runs by Dylan H during the 3rd over as Richie A then got caught superbly at cover by Gurnam Singh off Bruce R’s bowling without scoring.

Aakash T and Amar A were the two new batsmen for Granada in at 3 and 4, a partnership soon to be broken when Amar A was run out for just 1 before Dylan H clean bowled Aakash for 14 runs as Granada slipped to 36/4 after 9 overs.

Mike Epps and Rupesh came in but the latter was run out for 4 as half of the Granada side now dismissed on 48 runs after 12 overs. Phil T joined Mike E at number 7 who managed to score boundaries but Mike E was declared out LBW off of Chris Batten’s bowling on 22.

Phil T then fell on 26 runs, off the bowling of Chris Batten.

Mike D, Ribin Xavier also fell cheaply as Granada succumb to 109/9. Nick Watkins was left stranded as the last wicket fell (Stuart R) who was run out by Gurnam S with some help from Lee R behind the stumps, closing the Granada innings on 109 runs off 23.4 overs.

Result- CDS won by 139 Runs

CDS CC (Jaime R 92, Rupang 37 – Phil T 2-52, Rupesh 1-43)

Granada CC (Phil 26, Mike E 22 Chris B 3-17, Dylan 2-19)

POtM – Jaime Riley (92 runs, 2.4-0-14-0, 1 run-out)
