Sinsen Win La Manga Trophy
The La Manga 20/20 international cricket tournament took place recently with teams from Norway, the UK and all parts of Spain taking part.Due to bad weather on Friday no play took place but by Saturday the skies had cleared and a prompt 10 am start was made.
Combined Colleges beat Mojacar in a close fought game with over 280 runs being scored in the match. There was a more straight forward win for La Manga Hawks over close rivals Intellectuals in the other pool group which meant that both winners also needed to win their final game to guarantee a semi-final berth. This they duly did with wins over Ticknall CC and Madrid CC respectively.
Sinsen of Norway also beat Madrid and Intellectuals to claim their semi final spot, leaving the fourth up for grabs between Ticknall and La Manga Hawks.Ticknall had the edge because they held their fate in their own destiny and in a nail biting game they overcame Combined Colleges to clinch the final semi-final spot.
The semi-finals took place on Sunday with Sinsen overcoming Combined Colleges and Ticknall seeing off La Manga by a comfortable eight wickets.Sinsen batted first in the final and scored a modest 76 in a reduced 15 overs game due to fading light.Ticknall started well and looked in complete control before a middle order collapse left them looking for 9 runs off the last over.Tight bowling saw them run out of balls and Sinsen squeezed home with a 3 run victory with the result being in doubt right up to the last ball.
La Manga tided up the 3rd place with a victory over Combined Colleges, but surely cricket was the winner. Thanks to George Wambeek who organised such a successful event and for everyone who supported the Saturday night Gala dinner that managed to raise over 800 euros for Junior cricket in Spain.
