PINATAR PIRATES V LA MANGA (ECCL LEAGUE TWO)

A week ago Pinatar Pirates Cricket Club were crowned the ECCL Division 2 champions in their inaugural season, a great achievement. So for the last league game of the season a strong La Manga team travelled to Pinatar Arena, San Pedro to play the league champions.

The Pirates were keen not to let La Manga dampen their celebratory mood especially as they were to be presented the league trophy after the game when the real celebrations were to commence. However the first victory went La Manga as they won the toss and the Pirates were put into bat, a decision which the La Manga captain was soon beginning to regret.

Early on it was all joy when both openers were dismissed quickly, but those jubilant celebrations proved for nothing when Gopi Singh (57) and Elliott Banks (95) ripped into the La Manga bowling attack. La Manga did manage to slow down the run rate after the drinks interval when Gopi Singh was bowled out but all the incoming Pirate batsman contributed to the score helping the league champions, the Pinatar Pirates, reach a massive 276 of their 40 overs.

In reply the opposition stared well but when Elliott Banks removed opener Stuart Simkins for 18 and then Tom Vine with the very next ball for a first ball golden duck, the jubilant Pirates knew they had removed the sting from La Manga’s tail. David Williams (81 not out) was once again the visitors’ saviour, batting the whole 40 overs.

La Manga batsman knew the game could not be won and they went into blocking mode to salvage a losing draw to take back to La Manga. Youngsters Rupert James and Charlie Hunt showed fighting spirit as they dug in and showed some lengthy resistance but they could not see it through, both getting out before the end of play. La Manga finished on 141 for 4 of their 40 overs

The champions dominated this game and were happy to finish their league campaign with a winning draw, taking 17 points from the games while La Manga CC finished the day with 7 points.
