PINATAR PIRATES V INTELLECTUALS (ECCL LEAGUE TWO)

Match report from Pinatar Pirates on the home game with Intellectuals CC of Alicante..

The Pinatar Pirates Cricket Club returned to winning form last Sunday as they produced a devastating display in the field at their home ground at Pinatar Arena, San Pedro.

Their opponents, Intellectuals Cricket Club from Alicante will consider themselves unlucky to not only to find the home team in great form, but also having the better luck on the day.

Having won the toss and electing to field first, it looked like the Pirates were going to have a long hot day in the field, especially when the first over from Elliot Banks seemed to go on forrrreeeeeeever, with 8 wides being bowled!! it was a mammoth 14 ball over!!

However, some tight bowling from Harmit.Phull and Gopi Singh made runs hard to come by and the Pirates were soon on top with the away team on  44 runs with 2 wickets down after 16 overs.  Yasir Altaf (38) then got Intellectuals moving with some superb hard hitting and when he was dropped by Bittu Singh in his twenties, it looked like it was going to be a costly drop for the Pirates.

With Yasir Altaf hitting huge sixes out of the ground and the score racing past 50, the Pirates heads were starting to drop. it was at this stage that luck changed, or as they say a ‘moment of magic’ can change things, and for the Pirates it was started by talented young hopeful Vikash Singh running out the Intellectuals Captain for 7 with some world class fielding, a great pick up and direct hit at the stumps.

At the same time another young Pirate Akash Panchal came on to bowl, and produced a fantastic spell of spin bowling taking 5 wickets for 8 runs of 4.3 overs, including the prize wicket of Y.Altaf, much to Bittu Singh relief!!!.   It was an amazing turn round, 7 wickets falling for just 18 runs as the away team reached 85 all out of 28 overs.

With an hour plus before tea, the Pirates Captain Kevin Buckley (08) went out to open with the hero bowler Akash Panchal (32). It was Pinatar’s day, with both openers having a charmed life, they got the Pirates into the forties before they were both clean bowled by Waseem Waris (7-0-58-1) and Yasir Altaf (6-2-17-1) respectively, leaving Gopi Singh (17) and Vikash Singh (21) to steer victory home just in time for tea, 86 for 2 in 14overs.

With the time available after tea, both sides decided to play a friendly 15 over beer match,  with some Pirates deserting ship and playing for the away team, Akash and Jay, the scene was set for a very exciting and entertaining game, enjoyed by all, with the Intellectuals team going back home a little happier having won the beer match.

Pinatar Pirates would like to thank Intellectual Cricket Club for a very enjoyable day played in a very sporting and competitive manner, and of course the umpires David Riley and Vincent O Rielly for their professional and friendly approach to both games and their sponsors Elliot Estates UK and Gopi Singh of The Curry Leaf restaurant in Alcazeres for their continued support.

Special Thanks must also go to the ground staff who in their first year of preparing a Cricket Strip at Pinatar Arena are doing an outstanding job, the ground looks and plays brilliantly.
