ORIHUELA CONTINUE THEIR WINNING STREAK
Orihuela continued their rich vein of form with another strong performance and convincing victory, this time at the Intellectuals expense
Intellectuals won the toss and elected to take the field. Orihuela were one player light but did contain in their team four members of the Copperwheat family, who are quickly becoming the mainstay of Orihuela Cricket Club.
The opening bowling attack bowled very economically but failed to get that elusive breakthrough as the visitors toiled to score runs. At the 15 over drinks interval Orihuela stood at 34 without loss. Immediately after the drinks the Intellectuals struck with Tanveer Ahmed clean bowling Damon Haynes for 22.
This signalled an increase in pace from the Orihuela batsmen as Mark Copperwheat and Vikash Singh set about putting down a strong total for the home side to chase.A 95 run partnership was ebded when Vikash was bowled by Danny Butcher for a fine 42. Mark Copperwheat went on to complete an excellent half century before holing out at mid on off the bowling of Faulkner.
The tail did little to add runs to the Orihuela quest and they went into the interval with ascore of 160 for 8 off their full quota of 40 overs.
Intellectuals grafted hard and started brightly, and they were ahead of the run rate when Shah Ahmed was adjudged leg before with his teams total on 16. Sansom Berridale followed the very next ball to leave the home side tottering. Two more wickets fell without any runs being added to the score and when Rahul fell 2 runs later the Intellectuals were in all sorts of trouble.
No other Intellectual batsmen got into double figures and they were finally all out for 47 to lose by 113 runs. Damon Haynes took 4 for 20 and Matt Copperheat, Rico and Mark Copperwheat pitched in with two wickets each in a great all round bowling performance.
Orihuela obtained 17 points from the game and the Intellectuals took 4 points. Orihuela stll have aspirationsof finishing second in the development league in their first season, whilst the Intellectuals now have a tour of England to look forward to before facing Mojacar next up later on this summer.
