Mojacar Cricket Club v´s Albox Cavaliers – Saturday 19th May 2007-05-22 – La Manga

Mojacar Hold The Upper Hand Over Local Derby Rivals Albox

Mojacar Cricket Club returned to La Manga on Saturday to play their second league match of this years campaign against Albox Cavaliers.  Despite the familiarity of the two teams, having played under the Mojacar Cricket Club banner last year, much was expected from the confrontation.

Mojacar lost the toss and were put into bat by Albox, Finch (17) and Woolley (80) making a swift start to reach the ten over mark at a shade under six runs an over, aided by poor Albox bowling and good running between the wickets.  Fine batting from Woolley, a well constructed maiden half century and good support along the way from J Rose (26), Beal (26) and Blann (20) ensured steady scoring throughout Mojacar´s  45 overs.  A timely and swashbuckling innings from Lewis, showing his class, at the end of the innings ensured a daunting Mojacar total of 259 for 7.  Despite the aggressive batting, there were some good bowling performances, noteably from J Pugh (4 overs – 0 maidens – 3 wickets for 18 runs) and W Ali (9 – 0 – 1 – 40), however Albox were sure to be disappointed with their bowling performance.

In reply, the loss of Greaves (0) in the first over to a steep climbing ball from skipper and Spain paceman Beal, put Mojacar firmly in the driving seat.  Ali (39), despite some solid hitting was soon to follow, Harris (10) being hampered with a hamstring injury, retired hurt only to return once the innings was doomed.  Albox were never up with the required run rate and at times seldom looked interested in chasing the game, rather delighting in keeping Mojacar on the field for as long as possible.  The end came in the 37th over, as Albox succumbed for only 123 runs.  Pick of the Mojacar bowling were Rose, the elder (9 – 1 – 18 – 3), and Pedro ´the daddy´ Munden (7 – 1 – 17 – 3).  Mojacar came away only one point short of the maximum 20 points which puts them in second place, hot on the heels of Madrid at the top of the table.  Mojacar´s next match is against La Manga, at La Manga on Saturday  26th May.

Club nets are every Wednesday at 5pm and Sunday at 11pm, at our new net facilities at Cortijo Grande.  Junior coaching takes place an hour before club nets and all youngsters and parents are welcome to come along.  Please ring Club captain Phil Beal on  696 932 763 for further information.
