Six-a-SideBeach Cricket Tournament 14th June 2009

At around10pmon Sunday evening, Mojacar CC members celebrated a wonderful day of cricketing festivities with a few well deserved cold beers. Their inaugural Beach Cricket Tournament at Titos on Mojacar Playa was a huge success, attracting crowds of over 300 happy players, supporters and spectators.

Bynoon, all of the preparation was complete and the first of the 12 mini-league matches began. As the afternoon progressed, competition for the 4 semi-final places intensified and the crowd warmed to some excellent and entertaining performances.  Players came from a wide range of cricketing and non-cricketing backgrounds. There were men, women and children of all ages, and many of these are Spanish Nationals. For the large majority of those involved, this was their first introduction to the arts and craft of cricket; and hopefully not their last.

In early evening twilight, tournament winner, Chili Restaurant was presented with the victor’s trophy, by club chairman, Dave Redpath. This followed a nail biting and closely contested final against The Loft Bar. Both finalists received a replica trophy as a permanent memento of the day. Mojacar CC would like to thank all of the teams for their enthusiastic participation. Teams were: The Beachcomber, The Bell Enders, Chili Restaurant, Essentials Bar, Linaria Ireland, The Loft Bar, Mbar, El Naranjos, The Obnoxious Toffs, Reflections, Rolly’s Too and Triana Bar. Special thanks go to Titos for co-hosting the event.

To the sound of steel drums and calypso music the competition was played in great spirit and raised much needed funds for the development of Mojacar’s new ground in Turre. Additional funds were also raised for MACS, the cancer charity. To add a sombre but necessary note, the day began with one minutes silence to respect and remember a fellow cricketer, from Sporting Alfas CC, who very sadly died during a Spanish League fixture the previous day. Mojacar Cricket Clubs sympathy and condolence go to his colleagues, friends and family.

Until Mojacar CC establishes a permanent local presence in Turre, Beach Cricket is undoubtedly their best advertisement. The club is delighted at the level of interest shown and expressed by the general public and they

hope to see some of these new faces appearing at Sunday morning and Wednesday evening practice sessions in Turre. All are welcome to come along and get involved.

Given the undoubted success of this inaugural event, MCC are already planning the next beach competition that is provisionally scheduled for later this year, probably in September. Please watch this space for more information.
