It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Madrid Cricket Club at La Manga last weekend as they narrowly lost out to Torrevieja and comprehensively beat the Intellectuals the following day.
Saturday pitted Madrid against Torrevieja. The toss was won by Torrevieja who elected to field. A competent start for Madrid belied the batting collapse that was to follow. With the score on 33 Ian Blake was adjudged leg before and Madrid were one wicket down. The other opener, Shahid Awan continued to bat with aplomb, but all the other Madrid batsman could only score a further fourteen runs between them as the team from the capital were scuttled out for 87 in 35.2 overs.
Gulchard and Brown were the pick of the bowlers for Torreveija,each notching up three wickets apiece. Torrevieja´s batting was as brittle as Madrid´s however and they just crept over the line with two wickets and 7.2 overs to spare. The consistent Jack Webster was the only Torreveija batsman to get into double figures (22) but a total of twenty extras gave the coastal side a nervy victory.
17 points went the way of Torrevieja whilst Madrid took a total of 5 points from the game.
Sunday´s encounter with the Intellectuals was a short and one sided affair. Batting first the Intellectuals were ripped apart by the Madrid bowling attack and were all out for just 40 runs.
Madrid showed little sign of the fragile batting displayed the previous day and scored 44 to win the game without losing a wicket or a point to the visitors. Madrid got 20 points with Intellectuals not getting one, and at the end of the weekend Madrid remained top of the table, although all the teams bar Cazadores de Turre still remain in close contention for the development league title.
