Madrid CC selects two players from Tommy Miah’s Cricket Academy
Madrid Cricket Club has recruited two players from Tommy Miah’s Cricket Academy in Moulvibazar,Bangladesh, to play in its 5th Annual Solidarity T20 Cricket Tournament in La Manga Club,Murcia, from April 20th to 22nd this year.
Rahat Rahman Khan, a 19-year-old pace bowler, and Syed Mokammel Ali, a 25-year-old all rounder, will represent the academy and Bangladesh at the international event, which this year features clubs from Spain, England and Norway.
The players were selected during a recent visit to Bangladeshby David Stirton, Madrid CC 2nd team captain and Cricket España Government Liaison Officer, to promote Tommy Miah’s Cricket Academy and raise awareness for ASTI, Acid Survivors Trust International, the non-governmental organisation chosen by the club to receive funds raised at this year’s tournament.
Rahat is a very promising young player who has played in the Moulvibazar 1st Division cricket league and the regional Sylhet 1st Division cricket league. In 2011 he was selected to take part in the Bangladesh Cricket Board pace bowling programme.
Syed plays first class cricket for Sylhet in the 2011-12 national league and has also represented Moulvibazar District.
Both players train and play at Tommy Miah’s Cricket Academy.
David Stirton said of his trip: “Madrid CC is very grateful to Tommy Miah for giving us the opportunity to travel to Bangladesh and choose the players who will represent his Cricket Academy at our tournament. I had the chance to watch and umpire the game where I chose the players along with academy coach Rasel Ahmed, and I have to say I was very impressed by the standard of play.”
“There is a huge passion for cricket in Bangladesh and I was able to witness this first hand. I visited a local park in Dhaka and there were around fifteen different games going on at the same time, and then I was privileged to see the final of the Bangladesh Premier League, played in front of a capacity crowd of 35 000 at the national stadium. We hope to see the same enthusiasm for cricket here in Spain one day.”

Madrid CC’s visit to Bangladesh will hopefully be the start of a great partnership between Tommy Miah’s Cricket Academyand the oldest cricket club in Spain. With Madrid CC about to develop its own ground in the capital for the first time in its history, this landmark trip to Bangladesh and the 5th Annual Solidarity T20 Cricket Tournament shows just what any club can achieve if its members put their minds to it! Cricket may be growing and changing at an ever increasing speed but the spirit of cricket lives on in the players, the clubs and in what they accomplish.
