Levante CC finally got their first victory in the ECCL Premier League when they inched over the line against Alcorcon CC last weekend.
Winning the toss, Levante elected to field and the Alcorcon batsmen struggled early on with the pace of the pitch. From the home sides standpoint the crucial moment came when they got the visitors prolific batsman Tariq Ali, batting at three, out relatively cheaply.
The Spanish international had scored centuries in previous matches against the team from Valencia, but this time he failed to make a notable contribution, as skipper Scott Burchill gleefully held on to a mistimed drive at deep square leg off the bowling of Bruno Nunges.
Alcorcon then lost wickets at regular intervals but a late cameo by Ali Akbar (45) nudged the final score to 200. For Levante debutant Nisar made an excellent start, bagging five wickets for just 23 runs.
Levante began well enough and despite losing a couple of wickets looked to be cruising to a comfortable victory with Morgan and Usman begining to develope a useful partnership that the Alcorcon bowlers were struggling to break. However, a suicidal second run from Morgan saw him back in the pavillion for 47. Usman followed shortly afterwards for 44 and the Levante nerves started to fray.
With the total score some 20 runs away Alcorcon brought back their mainline bowler Ali Akbar and he took a couple of quick wickets to leave the home needing an handful of runs with just one wicket remaining.
However, all rounder Dave Tivey remained unflappable as he first hit a four to level the scores, and then dispatched a six over the crowded infield to send the Levante fans and players delirious. A great game of cricket, with the result in doubt right until the end.
Levante entertain Madrid United this coming weekend at the VCG looking for the back to back wins that will see them move off the bottom of the table.
