Year Five students of Colegio Loreto learn about Cricket
On Friday 15th April 2016, 88 Year five girls and boys (aged 11 – 12) from the Colegio Loreto took part in a two hour introduction to cricket event sponsored by Beisfam (the Astros’ school of Baseball and Softball) at the Valencia Baseball and Softball ground in Valencia. The event was organised and monitored by members of the Levante Cricket Club.
As none of the Colegio Loreto students had ever played cricket before, or in fact, were aware that the sport even existed, the challenge was to plan a fun, safe event appropriate for their ability and age.
To aid the year five boys and girls in their introduction to cricket a short video entitled ‘Orville + Kids’ was shown to the kids prior to the event.
During the two hour event the girls and boys were introduced to and willingly participated in the key Cricket disciplines of batting, bowling, fielding and catching as well as being given the chance to try on some of the equipment used when playing our wonderful game: well, who doesn’t love dressing up! After having fun learning the basics they were eager to put them into practice and get bat on ball, so the afternoon was rounded off with five energetic games of Kwik Cricket.
The hope is that some of the students will represent Levante Cricket Club in the not too distant future and that other schools will participate in similar events!
Many thanks for a very successful afternoon to Beisfam for sponsoring the event, Juan Martinez (maestro de Educación Física del Colegio Loreto) and the Colegio Loreto teachers for their help, Valencia Baseball and Softball for providing the venue and Levante Cricket Club for providing the equipment and organising and running the event.
