Lanzarote League Update

In previous years winners of the Naturally Floors sponsored league matches were awarded 2 points, this year however, in accordance to Cricket Espana regulations a team can gain a maximum of 20 points for them to do this not only do they have to win the match they also have to take all their opponents wickets (this is a very simplified interpretation of the points system, as some of you know cricket can be difficult enough to follow without me getting technical !!)

Last years champions Lanzarote Cricket Club began their defence of the title with taking just 14 overs to beat The Colts score of 85 all out. They continued with maximum points in their second match against Playa Blanca, although it wasnt all going their way, by the fall of their 4th wicket they had only 64 runs on the board, their saviour that day was Shobit who hit 9x6s and 15x4s before a brilliant catch by Charlie stopped him on 140 runs. Some poor bowling by P.B added 53 extras to LCCs final score of 317 in their 30 overs. P.B could only manage 96 runs all out. Frankie being man of the match taking 5 wickets for 62 runs and an excellent catch right on the boundary.

Points were dropped by LCC In their match against the Commitments, who, in my opinion are the most improved team this year. At the 15 over break LCC were on just 64 for 2 wickets. Poor fielding and 4 dropped catches allowed LCC to finish on 171 for 8 wickets. Commitments started slowly and when captain Paul was caught by Daniel in the 8th over the score was 43. Chris was next to go for a very poor duck (sorry love but it has to be mentioned). Darren rallied the team and by 15 overs and 74 for 2 Commitments were ahead in comparison to LCCs score. 3 more wickets fell quickly and things were not looking good for The Commitments, but the tailenders fought back. Final score 156 for 9, just 15 runs short.

The Spinnaker Dragons were no match for LCC, all out for 94 in 29 overs, highest scorer was Jon on 20. Bowling figures showed Shobit 5 for 14 in 6 overs,Frankie bowled 4, 2 being maidens 1for 5 and Deepu 6 overs 1 maiden 1 for 9. LCC took just 11 overs to beat the score, 79 of them coming from Frankies bat.

Next month LCC will be playing their final 2 matches, firstly against previous champions St.Georges, then current 20/20 winners Fishermans Inn.
St. Georges began their campaign with an interesting match against The Colts. Cameron was quickly out for 1 run, caught by Ian C, then Gary and Joe added 12 & 10 respectively before being dismissed, whilst this was happening Craig Andrews was happily knocking balls everywhere, when he reached 145 runs he retired as there were over 200 runs on the board. Great fielding by The Colts and St.Gs lost 5 wickets for a mere 10 runs, 3 going for ducks, therefore Craig had to pad up again and get back to the stumps. He finally finished on 177 (24x4s, 9x6s. St.Gs 300 for 9 in 30. George took 3wickets for 20 runs in 2 overs & Climie 3 for 40 in 6. The Colts were unable to fight back and were all out for 122 in 20 overs. Charlie did manage to surprise Des as he knocked him for 6 on his first ball, added a couple of 4s before hitting the ball straight to Simon

The Commitments had a sense of deja vu when they faced St.Gs, during the first half of the game they had the opposition on 90 for 5, then all out for 175, Garyhaving the highest score of 49 when stumped by Pete. Morph kept Craig Andrews down to 31 when taking a brilliant catch, and captain Des on 3 another great catch by Hellen at silly point. A disasterous start for Mel when he was run out first ball of his innings, but again at 15 overs The Commitments were on par at 95 for 5. The second part of their innings let them down, despite David hitting 32 the tail enders could not hang on despite having enough overs left they finally lost by 10 runs.

Craig Trapps had a lucky escape when opening for Fishermans in their first league match, he was dropped early on in the game but then went on to reach 111 not out including 13x 4s & 4×6s. Ryan was caught by Paul just short of his half century, this was Pauls only fielding highlight as he gave away 75 runs during his bowling spell. Fishermans 269 for 6. Paul redeemed himself slightly by hitting 12x 4s before Jamie caught him on 56. Four of The Commitments failed to score as they finished all out for 127. The Fishermans other 2 matches against Spinnaker Dragons and The Colts were both convincing wins and maximum points.

Many thanks to all the scorers for giving up their free time , anyone who wishes to join our growing crowd of supporters or who would like to play please check our website www.lanzarotecricket.com for contact numbers of club captains and chairmen.
