LANZAROTE LEAGUE UPDATE

by: conrad_a_bedford

The 35 over season, sponsored by Naturally Floors, started with a real bang with some cracking matches played between hugely competitive teams.

First game of the season saw Lanzarote Wolves host PDC Cobras. Batting first Wolves found themselves in trouble early on, a combination of excellent bowling from Cobras and some poor shot selection saw Wolves struggling at 89 for 7. V. Singh with 2 for 9 off 7 overs particularly impressive once again. However a magnificent and game changing 8th wicket partnership of 160 between S. Chhina, 104 and S. Brettell, 52 not out saw Wolves post 271 for 9 from their 35 overs.

Chasing such a large total, needing 8 an over from the start, proved too much for Cobras.  Only an excellent 63 from M. Evans and 38 from G. Cooper threatened but Cobras were all out for 177. R. Singh with 3 for 30 and S. Brettell with 2 for 23 the stand out bowlers.

The third game of the season saw PDC Cobras do battle with St Georges. Bowling first Cobras had St Georges 61 for 5, the top order all out cheaply. Excellent bowling from M. Herbert with 4 for 46 did the early wicket taking. Only a stubborn 43 from S. Elsden kept St Georges in it. However once N. Holmes, 52 and G. Dean, 30 came to the crease at 7 and 8 their powerful hitting was significant in helping St Georges reach a defendable total of 205.

Once again St Georges were really quite superb in the field. Both opening bowlers, N. Holmes and J. Beckley were ruthless in their line and length. After their spell of 14 overs N. Holmes had 2 wickets for 12 runs and J. Beckley 2 wickets for 13 runs. Cobras in dire trouble at 25 for 4. Once gun batsmen J. Rogerson was out for 18, caught by G. Dean off R. Shard at long off and a stubborn knock of 17 from P. Hirst ended after being bowled by N. French Cobras succumbed to 69 all out.

So three excellent early games to start the season off with. Next up sees Wolves play Lanzarote on sunday 17th, PDC Cobras play Lanzarote on sunday 24th and St Georges play Wolves on sunday 31st May. All games take place at the sportsground, old town PDC at 10.30. It would be great if you could get up there and give all the teams your support.R Shard
