Prior to the ECS Series in Barcelona, Cricket España and the Cataluyna Cricket Association teamed together to hold a Ladies training weekend at the iconic Montjuic Stadium in Barcelona.
The Women’s Director of Cricket, Elspeth Fowler and the Junior Director of Spanish Cricket Rico Phull joined forces with the regional coaches Nadim and Shabaz to put the girls through a series batting, fielding and bowling techniques over the two day period.
During that time they were also joined by the German international Verena Stolle, who was in Barcelona as part of ECS crew getting ready for the 15 day event that is currently taking place there.
Verena commented, “It was a pleasure to meet the Spanish girls at the baseball ground in Barcelona and to join their practice session with Rico and Elspeth. The fun and loud support during training makes them a nice group of girls to work with. I saw talented bowlers, batters and wicket keepers. All of them enjoyed training so hopefully they will continue and become the next generation of good cricketers. Best luck for their future! ”
Rico summed up the weekends events …
“It was and absolute pleasure delivering a cricket workshop to 12 very excited and enthuisiastic ladies at Montjuic Cricket Ground. The area is very fortunate to have such talented young players who with continious, regular coaching and practice will become the future stars of Spanish Women´s cricket. It was an awesome two days full of a lot of technical skills, practice, knowledge and understanding of key components of the game, and most importantly of all, fun. Many thanks to Verena Stolle, Women´s National team player for Germany for getting involved in the coaching sessions, the ladies loved their time with her and the opportunity to ask her questions about her cricketing experiences. ”
The coaches used Coaching Eye to record video of the girls in action, and the former English international Arran Brindle as kindly agreed to watch the footage and provide feedback and tips for the girls.
At the same time a very first training session for five girls was provided by members of the Costa Del Sol Cricket Club at the ground in Cartama. Further events are planned as Women’s cricket in Spain continues to grow in numerous regions throughout the country.
