Last weekend La Manga Resort hosted a Ladies hardball and softball tournament aimed at promoting and developing the ladies game in general.
Four teams played in the hard ball event whilst a further two teams competed in the soft ball competition.
The six a side event resulted in Ickenham remaining unbeaten in the hard ball competition seeing off teams from Sileby, Beaconsfield and Zurich Sapphires in the round robin stage and then Sileby in the final. Beaconsfield and Zurich shared a game each in the group stages but it was Beaconsfield who prevailed in the 3rd-4th play off.
The soft ball event saw Oakamoor overcome the challenge of Keyworth and the four hard ball teams entered into the spirit of things and played in the soft ball event as well. Oakamoor, the softball specialists inflicted the only defeat Ickamoor suffered throughout both competitions to finish the event on an high and win the soft ball tournament.
The Gala Dinner at the end of proceedings saw every team winning a prize for their endeavours. La Manga Club donated two nights at the resort for the lady who best embraced the spirit of cricket and FTI Sports donated two nights in either Madrid, Valencia or Barcelona for the champagne moment of the weekend. The best softball player received tickets to an England International mens match this season and the winner of the player of the year in the hard ball competition won tickets to an England Women’s International match this season of their choice. Both those prizes were generously donated by Claire Connor.
This event is proving increasingly popular every year and any Ladies teams interested in getting involved next year can contact Cricket Espana through the website. Congratulations to all involved and a special mention to Andy House for organising the whole event.
