LA MANGA WIN A THRILLER AT THE WOODBRIDGE OVEL
La Manga (18 points) 264 for 7 beat Sporting Alfas (7 points) 262 for 6 by 3 wickets..
La Manga came to the Woodbridge Oval for the top of the table clash with Alfas, and went back down the autovia to Murcia with a win after a cracking game of cricket at the Albir ground.
Alfas won the toss and elected to bat. They braced themselves for the hostile bowling attack of Tanveer Iqbal and Talat Ali, La Manga and Spain´s opening bowlers.
La Manga drew first blood when Spencer was caught behind by Brook off Talat for only 4, but then Howe and Pennick both knuckled down and concentrated on seeing off the deadly duo from the bowling attack.
They looked to be succeeding in their mission until Howe was unlucky to get out, hitting the ball onto his pad so it dollied up for an easy caught and bowled for Ali. Pennick was next to go, again unluckily, dragging onto his stumps when he was begining to look in particularly menacing form.
Despite these two quick back to back losses for Alfas they continued to dominate the bowling attack during the middle order of their innings and Climent (73), Fletcher (39) and Morgan (24) all made significant contributions to the Alfas total.
The end of the innings lost a bit of momentum, as the elusive fifth batting point fell out of reach, and the batting side instead concentrated on not losing any further wickets, and possibly, giving La Manga another bowling point.
La Manga went into the interval having to chase down an above par score, but it was testiment to their attitude that they were able to do this. They were given a great platform, as the openers Sajid and Joel Brook both scored half centuries and put on 91 for the first wicket.
At this point the game swung one way then the other, and it looked to have finally gone the way of Alfas when Spencer took a remarkable catch of the bowling to remove dangerman Talat for 19 with the score on 196 for 6 in the 32cd over.
However, Neil Brook had other ideas and he kept his composure to score a fine 54 not out, and hit a six for the winning run with a little more than 2 overs to spare. An excellent game of cricket ws played in a great spirit throughout, the standard of the bowling, batting and fielding was of an high quality, and the whole event was worthy of the top of a table clash between two of Spain´s premier teams.
