SPAIN V ISLE OF MAN

After enjoying the day off yesterday Spain got back to the job in hand today with a top of the table clash against the Isle of Man. Spain were bolstered by the presence of the Spanish Senior National Coach Bobby Denning who was taking time off from his role with Lancashire CC to be at St John´s to support the boys at todays game.

On the trip to the ground this morning the Junior director of cricket Neil Brook said the spirit in the camp was excellent and that the squad were really looking forward to the match. The start of the game was delayed 30 minutes because of rain and the teams finally went onto the pitch at 11.30 GMT.

The Isle of Man won the toss and elected to bat. Spain started well and had the hosts at 64 for 4 at the half way stage. Rowan Bird proved a thorn in the side of the Spanish bowlers and hit a fine half century for the Manx. With the game evenly poised at 120 for 4 in the 35th over the Islanders made the most of their last 5 overs to finish with the respectable, but not insurmountable score of 165 for 6 off 40 overs.

Spain started well enough, scoring 17 without the loss of a wicket by the 5th over. The next 10 overs the Manxmen took control and had Spain reeling at 51 for 4 after 15 overs. Spain continued to lose wickets at frequent intervals, finally being bowled all out for 105 in 33.2 overs.Aycock did most of the damage for the hosts, taking 3 for 20 off his allocated overs.

Spain´s next match is tommorrow (Wednesday) at Cronkbourne when the will play Austria. The Austrians have a won 1 lost 1 record, having beaten Germany in their first game, and having lost to the Swiss in the other Group B game that was played today.
