Local rivals Intellectuals of Alicante and Torrevieja CC squared off against each other in a top of the table clash this weekend that turned out to be a remarkable game of cricket.
The Intellectuals lost the toss and were put into bat by Torrevieja. It looked like a great decision by Torre has the Intellectuals made an horrendous start and were four wickets down with just four runs on the board after just a few overs.
The middle order, not for the first time, came to the batting sides rescue as Waseem Waris and Tom Richards put on an 107 wicket partnership to give the Intellectuals at total score of 124 all out. A hat trick by Torrevieja’s H Ullah was the highlight of the bowling performance and Ullah ended up with figures of 5-34 from his twelve overs.
The start to Torrevieja’s innings was even more shambolic than the Intellectuals who were five wickets down for five runs in as many overs. Without a middle order rescue the Torrevieja innings ended 30 all out and their unbeaten start to the season came to an abrupt end.
Waris added to his 63 runs by taking a 7 wicket haul for just nine runs that included two double wicket overs and a wicket maiden.
As a result Intellectuals are now back on top in a highly competitive ECCL Division Two and they play their next match on the 15th June at Bonalba against Madrid CC.
