INTELLECTUALS TOO CLEVER FOR ALFAS

 

On another hot and sunny Sunday afternoon , SACC won the toss and opted to bat first against the local side from Alicante.

 

Johnson and Robinson opened the innings for SACC , and both looked in fine form cutting and driving their way to a 50 run stand before a loose pull shot from Johnson sent him back to the changing rooms for 23.

 

MacInnes came to the crease with plenty of chirp from his old club , and left within 6 balls , shortly followed by Robinson for 33. Mariner was joined by new member Joe, and both players looked in good touch, scoring boundaries around the ground before the introduction of Khaliq swayed the game back in the Intellectuals favour.

 

He took 2 quick wickets to leave SACC struggling at 126-6 with only 10 overs to go in a match that was reduced in overs. The Alfas debutant Joe carried on punishing any bad bowling and reached his maiden half century for the club,and indeed, the first in his life. His composed innings took the SACC total to a respectable 186 for 7 and for the Intellectuals CC Khaliq was the oustanding bowler finishing on 2-23. He was ably assisted by Naveed who also carded the respectable figures of 2-31.

 

The Intellectuals chase started well , with Khalid and Stanford both hitting any bad bowling to the boundary before the introduction of Mariner (1-45) got the extra bounce from his spin bowling to dismiss Stanford when he was on 20.

 

Khalid was joined by Shan where they took their time to compile the runs needed to win ,against some tight bowling. However, Alfas were disappointing in the field , dropping 7 catches off this pair, that enabled the partnership to reach 90 runs before Shan was bowled.

 

Senior pro Bellis was brought into the bowling attack and he accounted for 2 quick wickets, to keep the game alive but realistically the Alfas total was 30 runs short on the fast outfield.

 

Requiring 5 a over from the last 5overs Khalid remained self-assured and hit 63not out and it was left to Laurence McGarry on his 50th Birthday to help steer the Intellectuals to a good win in a close match.

Charlie Johnson complimented is batting with a good bowling effort, finishing with 2-16 and the SACC team could have enjoyed a better result if they had not dropped a total of dropped 14 catches during the Alicante sides innings.

 

Next week sees Durham City CC visit for the first time playing Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 12.30 onwards. All are welcome with drinks and food served all day at the ground, colts training continues every Sunday from 10.30, although there will be no training this Sunday (29th March) due to a golf tournament in the morning.
