GJ ESTATES LANZAROTE CRICKET LEAGUE
The league season kicked off this year with last years winners St Georges playing the newly formed Khalsa.
St Georges won the toss and put Khalsa in to bat. Pete Starmer (1-23 from 7 overs) opened the bowling with David Smith (1-27 from 7 overs) and restricted the runs in the early overs. A decent partnership from David Leibrandt (43) and Ruble Singh (45) rallied the total to 92-2 at drinks. Neill French (5-22 from 6 overs) delivered a devastating spell from the stand end with the only other notable contribution coming from Rupon Singh (33) leaving Khalsa with a total of 154.
St Georges opened up scoring freely before Mike McDermott (13) was caught in the fourth over. David Smith (24) and Adam French (68*) continued scoring before Smith was caught at 86-2 just after drinks. None of the other St Georges players contributed any more than single figures however extras played a huge part being 31. St Georges were left requiring 7 to win from the last over with French and Nathan Stock (0*) at the crease. French hit the first ball for 6 and scored the required run with two balls to spare.
The second game was between LCC and Cobras where the LCC were to bat first. The innings never really got going with regular wickets falling throughout to a total of 133. Notable runs scored by Venky (36) and Monish Tahiliani (34) with wickets from Mat Evans (4-17 from 7 overs) and Jamie Rogerson (3-25 from 3.2 overs).
In reply, the Cobras scored at a steady 6 per over with the only wicket of Darren Spurr (17) falling in the eighth over. Seeing the remainder through was the other opener, Sachin Jaswal (75*) with Gill Singh (20*). The Cobras ended up knocking off the 134-1 in 18 overs.
The third game of the league season was the Cobras playing Khalsa where Khalsa elected to bat. The scoring got off to a flyer with Surender Singh (62) and Lali Singh (58) throwing hands through most balls reaching drinks at 183-0. Both wickets fell shortly after drinks bringing in David Leibrandt (53*) who ended up being accompanied by Ruble Singh (48). The score pushed along until the maximum of 35 overs had been reached with Khalsa on 312-4.
Cobras started reasonably well before Sachin Jaswal (25) was caught. Two more wickets of Gill Singh (26) and Chris Davidson (21) along with the retirement of Darren Spurr (53) left the Cobras short of batting and short on runs as they accumulated 217-7 from their allotted overs.
The fourth and final game of the month was held between St Georges and LCC. St Georges won the toss and put LCC in to bat. Proving like the right decision, wickets began tumbling to 16-4. A superb bowling display from Peter Starmer (3-30 from 7 overs) reduced the LCC to 46-7. Som resistance was met from Monish Tahiliani (20) and Luis (25) but ultimately the LCC were only able to set a target of 113.
In reply, St Georges got off to a a quick start with Mike McDermott (21) hitting the third ball of the innings for 6 but shortly after both openers were out with the score at 33-2. Steve Elsdon (32) provided some useful runs and the ever in form Adam French (16*) was around to see the innings through. St Georges scored 114-6 in 19.3 overs.
