FIRST GAME EVER FOR PUERTO DEL HIERRO
Winning weekend for Madrid CC
Madrid CC came out winners in two friendly matches played at the club’s ground in Alcorcón over the weekend.
On Saturday 15th, the 2nd XI took on Puerta de Hierro CC, a team made up entirely of Spanish players and based at the eponymous sports club in the city. This was Puerta de Hierro’s first ever game, and despite losing they put in a very decent performance and showed great promise for the future. Madrid CC eventually won by 75 runs.
Batting first, Madrid CC made 136 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs. Mohit Chandiramani top-scored with 25 (retired not out) while fellow opener Sonu Daniel made a respectable 21 before being bowled bySantiago. Useful knocks from Stuart Warren (15) and Adam (13 not out) plus contributions from most of the other batsmen made it one of the 2nd XI’s highest ever totals in the friendlies they have played in Alcorcón so far this year.
Puerta de Hierro were dismissed for 59 following some excellent opening bowling from Shahid (3 for 1 from 2 overs) and solid performances from almost the entire team. Everyone was given the opportunity to bowl and wickets were shared. For Puerta de Hierro Joaquín (17 not out) and Gabriel (16) were the outstanding batsmen.
Congratulations to Puerta de Hierro CC for a spirited first match and we look forward to a return game soon.
On Sunday 16th the opposition was of a different calibre altogether. A mix of theMadrid1st team and seconds took on Alcorcón CC, fresh from two impressive league wins in La Manga against Sporting Alfas 2nd XI and Madrid United.
This was the first ever game between the two teams since Alcorcón CC was set up at the end of 2009. It was Madrid CC, however, who drew first blood with an eight-run win in a twenty-five over game. Batting first, Madrid CC reached 146 for 8, largely thanks to a great knock from Irshad Khan (53). Charlie Marrow was second highest scorer with 16 and David Stirton made 11. Alcorcón will be disappointed to give away forty extras due to some wayward bowling.
Alcorcón chased the total valiantly, but lost wickets at regular intervals and were never ahead of the run rate. Tariq made 30 before being clean bowled by Marrow and opener Abbas impressed with 28. Naved ended up 20 not out when the last wicket fell withAlcorconon 138.
This match promises to be the first of many between two strong local rivals in the coming years.
A great weekend for cricket in the Spanish capital, and two fine wins for Madrid CC in the run up to our first league matches.

Captain,
