ESSEX SCHOOL HEADING TO SPAIN

Over the past few years Cricket Espana has formed a cricketing partnership with Essex county cricket club, the main reason behind this was to try and find ways of introducing young people to play cricket in Spain using ideas from ECB.

Since that time Essex County Cricket club have visited Spain on a number of occasions visiting schools in Madrid Barcelona and on the coast in the Costa Blanca region, coaching Spanish students and teaching them the game of Street Cricket.

Neil Brook recently got in touch with Chris Drummond (Development Officer at Essex) and discussed their inspirational schools program as Neil worked with a Phoenix International School in Alicante region who have shown a great desire to use cricket as part on the sporting curriculum. As a result of these discussions it was decided that Norlington School in Essex would visit Spain.

We’ve planned a visit of young leaders from Norlington school who have raised funds by themselves and with support of ex pupil and England Captain Graham Gooch they will visit Spain for 4 days in March, where they will go and visit some schools in the Alicante and Murcia regions guided by Essex coaches, to give coaching lessons to young students from Spanish schools, the final day will see them run a mini cricket tournament for boys and girls of mixed age groups.

They have a tight schedule where they will be met at Alicante airport on Tuesday morning by representatives of Phoenix School then invited to the school for Tapas and Paella for lunch.

In the afternoon they will meet the students and run some cricket coaching sessions.

On Wednesday the leaders from Norlington will head off in to two groups, one visiting schools in the Alicante region with the other group visiting schools in the Murcia regions of Spain.

Thursday will be the tournament held at CDM sports center Orihuela Costa hosted by Phoenix International School, and then Friday the group from Norlington school will depart for the UK.
