SPORTING ALFAS II 461 FOR 8 BEAT INTELLECTUALS CC 98 ALL OUT BY 368 RUNS
Sporting Alfas II capped off an excellent weekend for the Albir based club when demolishing the Intellectuals by 368 runs and breaking the batting record for 45 overs in the process.
Alfas won the toss, and elected to bat, and from the word go the home teams batsmen were punishing the visitors bowling. The score had moved rapidly on to 73 by the ninth over when the Intellectuals picked up their first wicket of the day with M P Matthews being clean bowled by Shan for an excellent 42.
There was no respite for the visitors with the introduction of the new batsman Abbas, and he and the other opener Evans continued to score heavily against the Intellectuals attack. Both passed their 50`s in double quick time and put on 130 for the second wicket before Abbas was bowled by Mudassar for a very entertaining 80.
Evans continued to play diligently, whilst the talented Afzal stroked fours and sixes at will off the dumbstruck visitors bowling attack. Alfas gained their final batting point in the 26th over and then with the score on 283 the home side lost their 3rd wicket when Evans was caught by Dawes off the bowling of Prior for a personal contribution of 68 runs.
By this time there was no stopping Afzal who plundered ball after ball to various parts of the ground. He was ably supported by Karl Packiam, who played better than his 10 runs suggest, and by newcomer Tasker, who showed lots of promise in his quickfire 15.
Afzal finally went for a fantastic 156, being caught by Khan off the bowling of Berri. Cameos from Bainbridge (not out 14) and Steve Lewis (5) helped the home sides innings finally close with a mammoth 461 for 8 on the board.
Intellectuals came out to bat and to their credit put up a spirited effort against a strong Alfas bowling attack. Afzal continued to torment the visitors, this time with the ball, and picked up the wickets of Barri and Shan for 7 and 10 respectively, The other opener, Bainbridge bowled with real venom, and accounted for the Intellectuals danger man Mudassar for 12, and then followed up with a couple more quick wickets to leave the visitors with 5 wickets down and less than 50 on the board.
Naveed and Dawes offered some resistance for a while but when Howden caught the former off the bowling of Bainbridge for 13 the visitors were in danger of not receiving a batting point. A sensible approach by McGarry saw the visitors edge past 75 for their first batting point, but that was only delaying the inevitable, and when stand in wicket keeper Marshall took off the bails from a smart Lewis throw to run out Prior with the score on 93 the game was over and the home team started to celebrate their 368 run victory.
