ALFAS 2 CONTINUE EARLY SEASON PROMISE
Kevin Laundon of Sporting Alfas reports..
This was a strange game!
Alfas were always on the back foot throughout nearly the whole match and yet, somehow, came away from La Manga winners.
Put into bat first, Alfas were immediately in trouble losing three quick wickets to an outstanding opening spell from Haymes (3-18). At 13-3 things didn’t look good! Only an excellent innings from Geoff Evans (94 not out), and support from Nix (25)and Cowley (20) enabled Alfas to reach 180 – 8 at the end of their alloted overs. With 5 ducks in the score this was not a day that many Alfas batsmen will remember fondly!
Returning to the field after the break Alfas still struggled and Orihuela looked to be moving comfortably towards an easy win. Poor catching and some slightly wayward bowling didn’t help.
Then at 145-2, and with plenty of time to spare, the Orihuela innings suddenly started to unravel! Some tremendous bowling from Cooper (5-36) and Ashraf (4-23) saw the last 8 wickets fall for just 30 runs! Bob Nix finished a good day behind the stumps with a sharp stumping on the last ball of the match, to gain the extra bowling point.
Apart from three great personal performances, one batting and two bowling, this was not a match that Alfas shone in. However it happened it did get us off to a winning start – but we will need to be much sharper if we are to succeed in this league.
