CRICKET BACK AT THE WOODBRIDGE OVAL

After a two month hiatus cricket returns to the Woodbridge Oval with the Sporting Alfas Sunday side taking on local rivals Intellectuals in a friendly fixture. Spanish internationals Phil Pennick, Christian Munoz and Ben Marriner are included in the Alfas side and the hosts must be clear favourites to take the spoils.

The Intellectuals welcome Chris Horne back into their ranks, and the captain for the day will be Tony Prior. After the game, which starts at the re-arranged time of 12.30 the Intellectuals will have their Annual General Meeting.

The other Alfas based clubs, Sporting Alfas I and the Sporting Alfas Midweek XI will open their fixture accounts at the end of next week. On Friday the 13th, the midweek XI welcome the first touring team of the season Geding and Sherwood from Nottinghamshire. Alfas captain Jeff Bellis is fortunate to be able to call on the experience of the former Spanish National captain Graham Howe, whilst the tourists could proove a stiff test depending on the make up of their team.

Last year their first team played in the Division A of their local league after gaining promotion the year before and  finished a respectable third. They have also acquired the services of an overseas coach and have a Second XI and a Sunday XI from which to make up their touring squad. This opener could be a tough test for the Midweek XI. For further information on the tourists check out their website at http://www.gedlingandsherwoodcricket.co.uk/index.htm

On Saturday 14th February, the Saturday side take on the Forty Club of Spain. Alfas have signed several of the Javea players during the close season and should be too strong for the aging Forty Club, who will be relying heavily on the spin and batting of Bill Curness to bring off a shock result.

La Manga will travel up to play at the Woodbridge Oval on the 21st February, in what will be a interesting test for Alfas and then touring regulars Tottenhoe will cap off the February fixtures when they play the Saturday side on the 28th.
