SPAIN UNDER 19´S 95 FOR 5 BEAT CAMPBELL COLLEGE 94 ALL OUT BY 5 WICKETS.
Spain drew first blood in the La Manga Junior festival when they won their opening encounter with Campbell College by 5 wickets. On a blustery day at La Manga, Spain won the toss and decided to field.Spain opened with their two most experience bowlers, Sunderland and Garside, and their knowledge of the La Manga conditions were soon paying dividends as the Belfast based College found themselves stuttering at 17 for 2. Sunderland was the recipient of both wickets, with wicket-keeper Johnston and Daley taking smart catches respectively.
Campbell had no answer to the Spanish opening bowlers and after 12 overs the score stood at 34 for 2. A change in the bowling attack did nothing to help the visitors, as Daley and Munoz continued the home sides tight bowling. Patrick McCorram and Michael Knaggs had played well but with the score on 48 Daley had the Campbell captain Knaggs caught on the boundary by a fine effort by Hersh. McCorrum soon followed, this time to a sharp caught and bowled by Daley and when Munoz chipped in with the wickets of Harkness and A Hodgins Campbell were shell shocked and struggling at 76 for 5. Things did not get any better as they lost their last 5 wickets for 18 runs as Munoz, Seekings, Daley and Vine all picked up wickets to mop up the tail very cheaply indeed.
Spain got off to a bad start with Brook, Seekings and Hersh all back in the pavillion with only 10 on the board. Some classy batting by Munoz and Garside rescued the home side and when Munoz played on with the score on 64 after only 15 overs the home side seemed home and dry. There was just one more scare as Smith went cheaply but Garside batted sensibly to steer the Spaniards home with 5 wickets and 12 overs to spare.
