SPAIN 128 FOR 3 BEAT BIRMINGHAM UNIVERSITY 127 FOR 5 BY 7 WICKETS
Spain extracted a little bit of revenge for their crushing defeat in the 50 overs game by securing a 7 wicket victory over Birmingham University in an unscheduled 20/20 match.
The University side batted first and after the quick loss of Richardson for three the students started to score freely taking 44 from the first six overs. Captain Sherry made the most of the fielding restrictions being reduced and in the 8th over Hemmings was caught in the deep off the bowling of Beal for 36. A quick fire 22 by Aslan, and by James Gray (11) bolstered the total to 99 by the 17th over, and with 28 runs coming off the last three overs the Midlanders posted a respectable total of 127 for 5.
In reply, Spain lost M Ali to the guile of spin bowler Gray when the score was on 29 in the 4th over, but by that time the other opener Shafique Ali was already on 26 and dispatching the bowling attack to all parts of the ground. Ali scored four sixes and four fours to secure his half century by the 10th over. With Crompton supporting soundly at the other end the pacing of the hosts innings looked on line for a comfortable victory. Some tight bowling by Hemmings, Sprittles and Gray clawed the visitors back into the game and when Wasim fell to Hemmings off the bowling of Griffin the game remained in the balance. However, the students had no answer to Crompton, who completed his 50 and with the support of all rounder Beal, who scored 12 not out the home side got the victory they craved in the 19th over with eleven balls to spare.
