SPAIN UNDER 17´S V FRANCE UNDER 17¨S

Pre-game Report

Spain play their last match of the Division 3 ICC Europe Championship today when they battle with France for the 3rd/4th play off spot. Spain hung on to second place in group B by the narrowest of margins, edging out the Swiss courtesy of a superior net run rate.

France will prove tough opponent, the associate nation have only lost to high flying Italy during the course of this tournament. The game will be played at Cronkbourne Cricket Club with a start time of 11 am GMT.

Post Game Report

Spain were once again involved in a tight finish against another associate side. Cronkbourne was the venue for Spain to take on France in the 3rd-4th play off. France won the toss and put the Spanish in. Despite the early loss of Brook Spain had a solid start and were looking good at 83 for 1 off 25 overs with opener Charlie Johnston batting well.

By the 30th over things had changed and Spain were pegged back to 100 for 6 with Johnston back in the pavillion for a well crafted 37. Momentum swung back the Spaniards way towards the end of the innings and they finally finished on a challenging 158 for 9 off their 40 overs.

France started cautiously but lost only one wicket in the first 10 overs. Several quick wickets put Spain again in control but William Smati was playing a dangerous innings for the French and he was instrumental in pushing the France innings into three figures by the 30th over before finally falling for an excellent 64.

Needing 29 off the last five overs with 4 wickets intact, the game was mirroring the German game from the day before. The game continued to stay in the balance and with two overs to go the French had two wickets remaining and 12 runs to find. Unfortunately, France kept their composure to win the game with one wicket and one ball to spare.

Spain can be proud of their performance in this tournament, in which they came an highly respectable 4th out of 10 teams.
