Fresh from winning the Madrid Solidarity Charity Tournament in La Manga and a pre season tour of Malaga, last years runners-up finally started their league campaign with a narrow victory over arch rivals Madrid CC, after their first game was washed out by rain in April..
Madrid United batted first and managed 202 all out off forty of their overs. A second wicket partnership between Waheed and Ashraf was the main contribution to United’s total, although Ali and Kashif did chip in at the end to gave the hosts a par score on the temperamental wicket at Sonseca.
For Madrid Steve Baker took three wickets for just 24 runs and Ollie Wrighton also bagged three wickets but at considerably more expense.
Madrid looked on target to chase down the score and at 111 for 3 it seemed that the game was there for the taking. However, a batting collapse ensued as Madrid lost their last six wickets for just 27 runs to fall 12 runs short and give United an unlikely victory.
The top order of Woodward, Wrightson, Langhans and Sharma all batted well for Madrid whilst Kashif with 3-20 was the pick of the United bowlers.
Madrid United (18 points) beat Madrid CC (8 points) by 12 runs.
