Levante CC showed their strength in depth with two solid victories against the touring Triskell Taverners from Madrid.

Fielding almost two completely different sides, LCC scored 147 from 20 overs on both days! That was enough for two wins against a spirited visiting side who showed flashes of really good cricket.

LCC wishes to thank the visitors for coming to Valencia and playing their part in a fantastic weekend.

Match One – Levante CC welcomed the touring Triskel Taverners to Moncada on a breezy, sunny day in Valencia ahead of a Saturday/Sunday double header. Levante were welcomed to set a score by visiting captain Woody and duly set about the task ahead. Openers Morgan and Kakkad batted with confidence and whilst the latter played carefully, Rhys went after the Taverners bowlers.

He was eventually bowled by Fitzgerald for 38 off just 26 deliveries. That brought Abid to the crease and soon after Green joined him when Kakkad retired on 42 having cracked three lovely boundaries. Abid failed to go for a run called for by Mark, who was subsequently left stranded and was run out for just 4 runs. Abid soon followed which left LCC in a spot of trouble. However Little continued his good start to the season by hitting a swift 18 and with the help of Rich, they moved the score to a commendable 147/3 off 20 overs. Fitzgerald the pick of the bowlers with a couple of wickets.

After tea and beers the Taverners openers made their way onto the fielders but didn’t last long as Pilkington took two wickets in his first over. When Tivey took another wicket the Taverners were in big trouble. However, that brought John to the crease who smacked the Levante bowlers around the ground, showing his class and temperament with some beautiful looking shots. He eventually retired to great applause after hitting his half century. The Taverners eventually fell for 116 having been invited by Levante to bat for 25 overs and bring back a couple of guys who were already out. The LCC bowlers put in a good all-round display as Pilks and Abid both took two wickets, Tivey, Rich, Little and Johnny Mc all chipped in too.

Levante win by 31 runs and everyone looks forward to the game tomorrow.

Match Two – The second day of the double header started the same as the previous day as Levante were invited to bat by the Taverners. Having changed all but two of the team from the previous day, Levante opened with Tivey and Ogilvie. Things didn’t go to plan though, as Tivey was plumb lbw for 0 and soon after Eaton joined him, bowled for 0. Fitzgerald the destroyer with some accurate swing bowling.

Captain Noon came to the crease with the team 0-2 but he and Ogilvie slowly got LCC back on track. Ogilvie was unlucky though as he got one that kept low and at 25-3 Levante were in big trouble. In came Burchell to join the captain and they set about building a total with patience and confidence. The partnership reached 75 as they brought up the hundred before Burchell was stumped when trying to pick up the pace for 38. Noon then went on the attack and soon after hitting consecutive sixes he brought up his 50 before retiring.

Amazingly, the team again finished with 147 runs on the board.

A quick turnaround after drinks and the Taverners openers made their way to the crease. Hamza took a wicket with his first ball, Tickel took a beauty that spun a mile and Adam got a deserved wicket after a fine opening spell. But the Taverners had reached 50 in the 8th over and were welcoming in John the danger man. However this time he was sent back to the pavilion for a duck after a great catch from Tivey off the bowling of Burchell. Three more ducks followed as Tivey and Noon took wickets to finish off a spirited display from the visitors.

LCC showed great squad depth with two great performances with two almost completely different sides. They go into the league on Saturday on the back of three straight wins and feel confident ahead of their trip to Alfas.

Levante CC wishes to take this opportunity to thank the visiting Taverners for a great weekend of cricket and for two games played in fantastic spirit. We wish them well for the future and hope they come back to Valencia soon.

The weekend was rounded off perfectly with paella and beers before the Taverners made the long journey back to Madrid.
