Hosts and current trophy holders Menorca started the 2017 Balearic Cup with a thumping 121 run victory over fellow islanders Ibiza.
It was the visitors who won the toss and invited the home side to bat first. Menorca responded positively and posted the challenging total of 239 for 7 from their 40 overs. Young all rounder James Davies, who scored 90 and 92 respectively on consecutive days against the touring side Big West Cricket Club last weekend went one better this time around and hit a century before finally falling with 104 to his name.
In reply, Ibiza started badly from the off and were struggling at 79 for seven after 24 overs. The Ibiza batsmen had no answer to the bowling of David Catterall who took five wickets for a paltry twelve runs.
Ibiza finally finished all out for 118 to put Menorca in prime position to retain the silverware in this prestigious triangular event.
Tommorow Ibiza are in action again, this time against Mallorca, and then Sunday Menorca take on Mallorca. Both games start at 13.30 and entrance is free and all spectators welcome.
