Recently Spain took part in the European Affiliates Cricket Championship, which was held in Belgium. Nine teams from throughout Europe took part with three groups of three teams playing a round robin in Phase 1.The top two from each group carried forward their points to the Super 6 phase and did not play each other again. In the Super 6 each team played against all the other teams (4 matches per team) with the third placed sides from Phase 1 playing each other for positions 7-9.
Spain was drawn against Norway(the current European Champions) and Croatia in phase 1. The opening match saw Spain taking the field against Norway and with an excellent bowling and fielding display Norway were dismissed for 185 off 39 overs.Wickets were shared with Fletcher taking 2 for 25, Pennick 2 for 19 and Barca 2 for 44. Hopes were high when Spain batted but despite a steady start by Stanfield scoring 27 and Wasim a well struck 52 the middle order failed and Spain collapsed to 154 all out.Once again Spain’s failure to bat as a unit let them down; that said a 31 run defeat against the European Champions was not a disgrace.
