CRICKET ESPANA LEAGUE ROUND UP

COSTA LEAGUE 1

The premier league on the Costa Blanca coast is shaping up nicely with Sporting Alfas and La Manga in prime position at this moment in time. Both teams remain undefeated and face up against each other for the first time at the Woodbridge Oval on the 17th of July. The return fixture at La Manga takes place on August 1st at the Murcia based complex.

Valencia Green still have strong claims for winning the group stage and they have yet to play both the top teams. They are more than capable of raising their game and suprising one of the ” big two” on their day. They will play a major part in the run in as to who finishes top in this tightly fought competition.

Madrid I have combated the long travelling well and are enjoying their cricket this season. Losses against La Manga and Alfas have been sandwiched in between with a spirited victory over Mojacar.

Mojacar are having a topsy turvy season. Mauled by La Manga in their first game, they came back well with a convincing win against Albox only to lose their third match against Madrid when they had every chance of winning it.

Valencia can count themselves unlucky not to have more points. They have played Alfas twice, and came up against the Albir outfit when they were in sparking form. The forfeiture of their match against La Manga means they lie with minus points near the bottom of the league table at the moment, but expect them to finish mid table if they manage to complete the rest of their matches without further hiccoups.

Albox have had a season beset with problems to date and have struggled to put out a team for every game. The forfeiture of their game against Valencia Green means they too are still looking to get their points total into the black column.

Results to date, up to and including Saturday 5th June

8th May , La Manga (20 points) beat Mojacar (-2 points) by 407 runs

COSTA BLANCA DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE

The Costa Blanca Development League is as equally exciting with Alcorcon setting a scorching pace as front runners. This league club is on the outskirts of Madrid and Alcorcon is perhaps most famous for its football team knocking Real Madrid out of the Copa Del Rey this season.

The cricket team have also proved to be a suprise package and are in prime position at the top of the Development league with three consecutive victories.

Due to the fact they have played 5 games the Intellectuals are breathing down Alcorcon´s neck. How the must be rueing the fact they were unable to field a side against San Fulgencio and consequently have had 10 points deducted from their current total.

Sporting Alfas 2 have split the two games they have played so far this season with a win and a loss. Comprising of most of the Junior Academy they are hoping to finish amongst the frontrunners in this highly competitive league.

Madrid United could be another suprise package. Having lost to Alcorcon on the opening game of the season, we have yet to see them on the cricket field again. With a glut of games coming up later in the season they may well become a force to be reckoned with.

San Fulgencio have matched their enthusiasm off the field with some spirited performances on it. Again, relying on youth they have put in fine performances against the Intellectuals and Sporting Alfas respectively, and the 17 points forfeited by the Intellectuals have helped to bolster their league cause.

Madrid II will hope to put the nightmare of last weekend behind them. Scheduled to play two games they were unable to field a team and consequently lost 20 points before their season had effectively started. Their goal this season will now be to complete all their matches and finish with a positive points balance come October.

Results to date, up to and including June 6th.

May 8th, Alcorcon (20 points) beat Madrid United ( 4 points) by 9 wickets

CATALUYNA LEAGUE A

Cataluyna league A continues to remaun interesting with possibly only Santa Coloma no longer in with a chance of topping the group.

Cataluyna CC and Ali CC have won both their matches to date but Ali have a slight advantage because Cataluyna were deducted two points for only fielding ten players against Bengali CC.

Fondo, Bengali and Barcelona Eagles have all won one game each, so have an outside chance of reaching the finals, although the Eagles have played three games so progress to the next stage looks remote at best.

With Santa Coloma still winless from three games their plight looks even more precarious than that of the Eagles.

With the Cataluyna league using a different points system that has no bonus points on offer, the final standings could well depend on net run rate.

League results Cataluyna League A up to 22cd May.

March 7th, Ali CC (10 points) beat Barcelona Eagles (0 points) by 48 runs.

April 4th, Barcelona Eagles (10 points) beat Santa Coloma (0 points) by 166 runs.

April 10th, Cataluyna (8 points) beat Bengali CC (0 points) by 6 wickets.

May 2cd, Ali CC (10 points) beat Bengali (0 points) by 22 runs

May 9th, Fondo CC (10 points) beat Santa Coloma (0 points) by 60 runs

May 16th, Bengali (10 points) beat Barcelona Eagles (0 points) by 5 wickets

May 22cd, Cataluyna (10 points) beat Fondo (0 points) by 7 wickets.

CATALUYNA LEAGUE B

Cataluyna B looks a much close affair with 4 teams all in pursuit of the league B title. It does seem last years winners Falco will not be progressing past the group stages and a new name will be on the SIS Trophy kindly donated this year by Ken Sainsbury  and Andrew Copeland.

Olot, Minhaj and Barcelona Internationals all have two wins each although the International eleven have played a game more than their rivals and Barcelona CC are still in the mix having secured one victory this season.

Cornella are firmly rooted at the bottom of league B with three consecutive losses and along with Falco are currently on minus points for not fielding maximum players in one of their games.
