Madrid United travelled to the Woodbridge Oval this weekend and went back home Sunday night without a victory after two heavy defeats at the hands of Sporting Alfas.
In the Saturday game Alfas gained maximum points in a strong team performance. Batting first United could only muster a sub par total of 184 all out. Kevin Laundon was in excellent form with the ball, taking a hat trick, and finishing with figures of 5-27. Behind the stumps former Spanish international Graeme Ward proved as consistent as ever, bagging five catches, despite taking a nasty knock on the head whilst keeping during the Madrid United innings.
Alfas started well and knocked off the total with ease. Youngsters Joel Brook and Jamie Roper continued their excellent early season form with 38 and 40 respectively, and current Spanish international Gary Crompton finished off the job with an undefeated half century.
Alfas received 20 points from the game, whilst United’s point tally totalled 4 points at the end of the day.
The Sunday game was a little closer. Batting first Alfas did not see out there overs and lost out on two potential batting points by scoring 207 all out. Again Roper made a major contribution, this time scoring 53 with a great knock that held the Alfas innings together to give them something to bowl at.
Again, the Alfas bowling machine proved too strong for the Madrid side, with the spin twins of Crompton and Shazad taking seven wickets between them to restrict United to just 129 all out. Again Ward showed his class behind the stumps by taking another four catches.
18 points for Alfas and 7 points to Madrid United as the league table starts to take shape after four league games this weekend.
