CRICKET ESPAÑA CLUBS VOTE TO CHANGE LEAGUE FORMAT IN 2009
At a recent meeting of CE League clubs it was decided that the League for 2009 would comprise a 1st and a 2nd Division with teams playing each other twice. The make up of each Division will be seeded based upon team performances in the 2008 League. Additionally, the League Committee were tasked to devise a promotion and relegation system for the Leagues with the possibility of providing some sort of system for play off matches. In this way interest would be maintained all the way to the end of the season.
As 2009 would now involve promotion and relegation and sides in either Division could be from both the current North and South divisions, it would be necessary to standardise the number of overs per innings. Due to the fact that one ground used for league purposes could not guarantee ground availability for more than 40 overs it was agreed that in 2009 all matches would be of 40 overs per innings.
All Clubs were in favour of Regional Cricket and saw this as a first step towards reaching National squad level and improving the standard of cricket inSpain. It was agreed that a start be made by selecting teams from the north and the south ofSpain. The game will be 50 overs per side (as in all ECC Senior Competitions) and the inaugural match will be played at La Manga. The Director of Cricket was tasked with the selection and organisation of Regional Cricket and it was suggested that CE should sponsor the first match.
