Three Under 14 teams converged on the Catama Oval last weekend to play in a triangular event created to stimulate the growth of Junior Cricket in the region. The hosts, Costa Del Sol Crusdaers were joined by Colegio Spinola Juniors from Madrid and a Rock XI from Gibraltar.
The whole event was organized by David Young of England Cricket, Lewis and Meredith from Madrid, and Sunil and Guy from Gibraltar Cricket. Harmit Phull, the Junior development of Cricket officer for Spain was also there to assist and distribute Junior Equipment donated by Cricket España.
Game One was between Costa Del Sol and Gibraltar. The Andalucians posted an impressive score of 138 for 5 from their twenty overs with H Scott and B Scott hitting 28 not out and 26 not out respectively.
In reply the Rock XI scored an equally impressive 93 for 5 with L Bruce top scoring with 30. Harry Scott was also on fire with the ball, bagging 2-20, to earn him the man of the match award and help his team to a 45 run victory.
Madrid XI entered the tournament in game two and made a winning start with a nine wicket victory over the Rock XI. Gibraltar posted 64 for 7 but Madrid surpassed that total in the 13th over with the loss of just one wicket. Dhurav Paul of Madrid was nominated man of the match for his 29 not out and two wickets for just nine runs.
Heading into match three it was a winner takes all scenario. The contest was fitting for a final with Costa Del Sol edging the game by just six runs. CDS batted first and a fine unbeaten 26 by Alex Young and another solid innings of 26 by Harry Scott gave the hosts a final total of 121 for 5 off their twenty overs. Madrid XI kept pace well with the run chase but finally run out just shy of the necessary requirement, finishing on 115 for 7. Young again showed his all round ability by taking two Madrid wickets for just seven runs to be named Man of the Match in the final.
A fantastic weekend was played in glorious sunshine and in an excellent spirit. All involved in the organisation of the event should be applauded for their efforts. Future tournaments involving Spanish youngsters are anticipated in the near future.
