Recently the CPL Auction (Cataluyna Premier League) took place and the six teams now know their squads for this year’s competition.
The current champions Barcelona Qalanders have Babar Mirza once again back in their ranks and in the Spanish International Awais Ahmed they have a very powerful opening batsman and strong wicket keeper.
Last year’s runners up Cataluyna Kings have the in form Kamran Butt in their side (who recently put in a match winning performance with the ball for United CC against Cataluyna CC), and in their skipper Tanveer Iqbal they have a player with plenty of experience who can win a game single-handedly with either the bat or ball.
Last year’s semi finalists Tarragona Gladiators will hope to at least reach the final this year and the Cricket Espana Under 19 coach Armaghan Khan will have a big part to play if his side are to go deep in the tournament. They also include the exciting prospect Gopi Singh, a junior with Friends XI who made a century in this year’s Cataluyna Junior League.
Girona Royals have a nicely balanced squad and will be looking for key performances from the likes of Adeel Ali, Kashif Butt and Atif Mehmood who is captain of the Cataluyna Under 19 team whilst Lleida Lions will hope Naseer Ahmed and captain/owner Wajid Hussain can have tournaments to be proud of.
Newcomers Boom Boom Badalona look an interesting prospect and could cause a problem or two for any of the other five teams. Proficent batsman Yasir Ali remains one of the top players in Spain and his international team mate Zulqanain Haider is very capable of having a good tournament. Also, in Basharat Mirza they also have an explosive batsmen that can tame any bowling line up on his day.
Finally, all six teams can add three players each from outside the Cataluyna League to their squad. Tarragona have gone with two of the Pinatar Pirates team that recently won the ECCL Championship. Kuldeep Lal and Vinod Vini (both Spanish internationals) have secured a spot in the Gladiators line up. Furthermore, fellow internationals Christian Munoz-Mills and Ravi Panchal are two of the Qalander picks along with Faisal Shah. Newcomers, Boom Boom Badalona have also acquired the services of Madrid United star Adnan Quereshi. The other teams have still to announce their “three outsiders” for the competition.
