ALI CROWNED CATALUYNA LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
Ali were crowned the Cataluyna league champions for 2010, and they along with Cataluyna CC will be heading to La Manga in October for the league play off finals.
Ali won the toss and decided to bat. Cataluyna took first blood when they had Abbas caught behind with only 1 on the scoreboard. Anwar and Gurmeet both looked in good form, but a second catch behind the stumps by Shafique to dismiss Anwar reduced Ali to 18 for 2.Gurmeet played a classy innings for 21 and then the middle order batsman of Abisheikh and Atique punished some of the short bowling from Cataluyna to up the score rate at a crucial stage in the Ali innings.
Cataluyna dropped several catches in the deep during this stage of the Ali innings and this was to prove their downfall later in the game. Ali finally ended their innings with a score of 157 all out off 24.2 overs.
A mention must go to former Spanish wicket keeper Shafique Ali who took a total of 5 catches and 2 stumpings in an excellent display of wicket keeping.
In reply, Cataluyna got off to a rapid start with the opener Shah making the most of the early over fielding restrictions. He blasted 23 off just 15 balls but when he fell to an excellent catch by Faisal with the score on 28 the Cataluyna teams batting went into a steady decline.
Several poor shot selections led to the needless loss of wickets and when Nisar was run out with the score at 106 for the loss of 8 wickets the game was all but over. It was left to Zain to remove Kulwants middle stump to end the game and give Ali CC the win they desperately wanted. The fall of the final wicket led to scenes of delight and celebrarions among the Ali players, and it was left to Jordi, the Cataluyna Sports Minister to present the trophies that ended a fine season in the Cataluyna section of the league.
Both Ali CC and Cataluyna CC will be the league repesentatives from the North for the league play offs in La Manga in October of this year. There they will face the winners and runners up of the Costa Blanca 1 and Southern leagues. At the moment Valencia Green, La Manga, Cordoba and Combined Colleges hold these spots, but both Malaga in the South and Alfas in Costa Blanca 1 still have outside chances of qualifying for the finals play offs.
